❤️ Purpur vs Paper: The Ultimate Battle for Server Performance
If you've tried to create a Minecraft server recently, you've probably run into an "alphabet soup" of names: Vanilla, Spigot, Paper, Tuinity, Pufferfish, Purpur…
Why is it so complicated? Shouldn't just downloading the file from Mojang be enough?
The short answer is: No, not if you want your server to survive more than 3 players.
In this article, we're going to clear the fog, explain why these options exist, and most importantly, help you decide which engine is perfect for your project between the two current titans: Paper and Purpur.
🧬 The Minecraft "Genealogy": Why do so many exist?
To understand what to choose, you first need to understand that the original Minecraft code (Vanilla) is not designed for high-performance multiplayer. It's great for playing on LAN with your brother, but if you put 20 people in it, the server will explode.
That's why the community created "Forks". Imagine a chain of improvements, where each software takes the previous one and makes it faster:
Vanilla (Mojang): The base code. Slow, single main processing thread.
Bukkit/Spigot: The grandfathers. They allowed the use of Plugins. Spigot optimized Bukkit, but today it is considered "Legacy technology".
PaperMC: The gold standard. It took Spigot and rewrote much of the logic to make it drastically faster.
Pufferfish: A fork of Paper focused on aggressive performance.
Purpur: The modern protagonist. It takes everything good from Paper and Pufferfish, and adds a massive layer of gameplay customization.
Admin Note: As of today, there is no technical reason to use Spigot. Paper and its derivatives do the same thing, but infinitely better.
📄 Contender #1: Paper (Stability Above All)
Paper is, currently, the default "operating system" for most professional servers. Its philosophy is simple: Performance and bug fixing, without touching game mechanics.
What does Paper do?
Asynchronous Optimization: Loads chunks and saves data on separate threads so the main game doesn't freeze.
Exploit Fixes: Patches item duplication and X-ray glitches that Mojang takes months to solve.
Fidelity: Strives to keep mechanics "Vanilla". If an iron farm works in Vanilla, it should work in Paper.
✅ Choose Paper if:
You are looking for a 100% Vanilla-faithful experience (Technical Survival).
You are new to admining and want something "install and forget".
Absolute stability is your number one priority.
🔮 Contender #2: Purpur (Customization and Power)
Purpur is for admins who say: "Paper's performance is great, but I want MORE control".
Purpur is a "Fork of a Fork" (it's based on Paper). This means it has all of Paper's optimizations, but adds hundreds of configuration options that Mojang would never give you.
What makes Purpur different?
Inherits Pufferfish: Includes very aggressive performance patches that Paper sometimes doesn't accept.
Configurable Gameplay: Do you want villagers not to turn into witches? Do you want to ride Ravagers? Do you want the Ender Dragon to respawn every hour? Purpur lets you do it with a simple config change, without extra plugins.
Native Features: Things like Silk Touch on Spawners come built-in.
✅ Choose Purpur if:
You want to squeeze every last TPS of performance.
You like modifying game mechanics (e.g., making crops grow faster or changing mob AI) without using Mods.

🥊 Head to Head: Formal Differences
Feature | PaperMC | Purpur |
Base | Fork of Spigot | Fork of Paper (+ Pufferfish) |
Performance | Excellent (Industry Standard) | Extreme (Includes aggressive optimizations) |
Configuration | Performance focused | Gameplay + Performance focused |
Vanilla Mechanics | Tries not to break them | Allows you to break/change them if you want |
Updates | Very fast | Follows Paper (sometimes hours apart) |
Difficulty | Low | Medium (Many more options to configure) |
🏆 The Verdict: Which one should I use?
There are no wrong answers here, but there are strategic decisions.
Scenario A: "I want a pure Technical Survival"
👉 Go with Paper.
Technical players are very demanding. If you change a millisecond in a villager's AI, their farms break. Paper is the safest bet to guarantee that complex Redstone mechanics work just like in the original game.
Scenario B: "I want a fun, optimized server with unique features"
👉 Go with Purpur.
This is my personal recommendation for 90% of modern servers. The ability to toggle things like "allow players to open a donkey's inventory while riding it" or "change mob attack range" gives you incredible power. Plus, its extra optimizations usually give you a few more TPS during stress moments.
Final Summary
Paper is the Toyota Corolla: Reliable, efficient, gets you everywhere, never fails.
Purpur is that same Toyota, but with a turbo engine, sport spoilers, and an onboard computer that lets you tune the fuel injection.
My advice: Start with Purpur. If the options overwhelm you, leave them at default (it will act just like Paper). But the day you need that extra power or customization, you'll be glad you have it installed.
