Before switching hosting or adding RAM to a Valheim 1.0 server, check versions, mods and platforms. A connection failure may be a compatibility issue rather than a shortage of resources. Here are the checks that help you get back to playing without risking your world. Reviewed September 13, 2026.
Crossplay: the exception to check first
The September 11 official advisory says Switch 2 did not receive the patch and cannot currently crossplay with other platforms. Xbox displays 1.0.11, equivalent to 1.0.10; Steam received 1.0.12, which fixes access lists using older player IDs among other issues. Check for an updated advisory before blaming your server.
Match the symptom to the first check
| Symptom | Check first | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Only a Switch 2 player cannot join | The crossplay incident status. | Reinstalling the world first. |
| An authorized player is rejected | Version, player ID and access list. | Opening access to everyone for testing. |
| The server fails when loading mods | Each mod and loader’s compatibility. | Removing content mods from the original world. |
| A large base causes stutters | Measurements with the same route and players. | Assuming more RAM fixes everything. |
Mods: validate a combination, not a list of names

Keep your group’s world available
Explore VPS options for a self-managed Valheim server. Confirm suitable resources and compatibility with support before ordering.
Explore VPS HostingIron Gate keeps the game designed for 1–10 players and does not guarantee mod compatibility or offer official console mod support. See the Valheim 1.0 FAQ. A Thunderstore listing is not proof of compatibility with your build.
Record each mod’s name, version and dependencies. Reproduce that exact setup in an isolated server copy. Test startup, connection, inventory, building and persistence after restarting. If it fails, change one dependency at a time. We do not label untested mods as compatible.
A ten-minute check before reopening
This is a suggested review budget, not a promise about update or large-backup duration.
- Minutes 0–2: record server and client versions, platforms and the latest available backup.
- Minutes 2–5: test a player from each available platform and verify permissions.
- Minutes 5–8: visit a familiar base and check objects, errors and saving in the test copy.
- Minutes 8–10: decide whether to reopen, wait for a patch or retain the previous setup with its compatible backup.
Before updating, save and stop the server normally. Keep world files, configuration and dependencies off the machine. Production and testing must never write to the same directory. Our Valheim 1.0 and Deep North guide covers the launch and existing worlds.
When does a dedicated server make sense?
If everyone always plays together, a friend’s computer may be enough. A dedicated server removes that dependency but still needs someone responsible for security and recovery. For example, test a six-player group at its busiest base with all six connected; record memory, CPU and latency before sizing resources.
Our recommendation: stabilize an unmodified installation before adding complexity. For infrastructure you manage yourself, explore TERAMONT VPS Hosting. A VPS does not automatically include a Valheim panel or guarantee mod compatibility.
